It’s pretty early for a boy, but if you have signs from him that he’s ready, then give it a try. Usually boys aren’t ready so soon.
Some kids like the little separate potty – go with a simple one, and some like the insert seat for the regular toilet.
Whatever you try, just don’t go with using pullups – kids treat them like a diaper, which defeats the purpose.
Any potty is fine if he likes music get one that sings. But most important is to take him to the bathroom when you go and or ask him all the time if he does have to go and when he does go give him praise so that he know what he is doing is right and he will feel good about going and he will get used to it. But I took my son every 10-15 min for the first few months even if he didn’t do anything and I always told him what a good job he was doing.
Why use one at all ? For most of the 20th and now the 21st century people have used the toilet. Why waste money on something that is basically training wheels for a toilet anyway ? Many a child has slipped through the big hole until they’ve learned to hang on and balance. And I’m sure if you sit and talk with older people, there are some pretty fond memories of potty training.
16 months is vary early to start with the potty but get a simple quiet one
Simple ones are cheaper and just as effective. My daughter has a noisy one that she got from my parents and she doesnt een notice that it makes noise. It has a little toy TP thing attached to it and she’ll spin that around but she never makes it play. Id just go with a simple one.
The thing that worked for my mom when she was training my brother was Cheerios. Throw a few Cheerios into the water of the toilet (or put a little water in the potty chair) and let him shoot them down. My mom always kept a little box of Cheerios in the bathroom for that very reason.
Just make sure that if you buy a potty chair that the container is under the seat. I had one for my daughter that you had to lift out of the seat and she pinched her leg really bad on it. Needless to say, I had to quit trying to potty training her cause she was so scared of the potty. We threw that one away cause she would no longer use it and we didn’t want to risk her getting hurt again.
A simple seat and a BIG box of Cheerios, that’s the ticket!!
Lot’s of “You’re such a BIG BOY!!” works well with it too!!
Good luck!! : )
