what would be a good medical field for me?
This Question From Mississippi LPN Programs | 4 Answers
I am a 37 yo father of 2 who has been unemployed since july of last year(the economy is worse here in mississippi)I have started back taking refresher classes at an adult ed center to help me when I take the ACT.I know I want to get into the medical field, but I don’t know what I want to do.I took an EMT-B class 3 years ago with the desire to go on to be an EMT-P but I don’t know if I really want to make a career out of dealing with death first hand.I then thought about LPN but everyone tells me if Im going to do that,go another year to be an RN instead, but I don’t know if I want to devote my time to the 2 year RN program. Then I thought about an x-ray tech. or a lab tech.but the only problem is that the closest school is 80 miles from here and they are a 2 year degree. We have a community college here that teaches the EMT,LPN and the RN programs so the college here would be more convenient for me.Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be a good field for me to get into other than those?

if you can’t do the x ray tech, do the RN thing. it will pay off in the long run and you will always have employment.
If you can get the basics towards an RN degree in your area, do it. As a registered nurse you can get into other disciplines later as you get more exposure to what may be available/you like. One could be nurse anesthesiology, another could be nursing home director. Basic x-ray would also be a good career but you would need to get another discipline like MRI or CT to really be marketable. Good luck in you goals, but be sure to map out your goals and go for it!!
I would do RN. go for that extra year and try to get into the program at the community college. when you get out, you will find a job faster and make more money than an LPN or X-ray tech or EMT or lab tech. basically what i am trying to say is that there are more jobs as an RN than the others you mentioned. so the job as an RN is more stable.. believe me, two years go by fast, unless you have to fulfill some prerequisites, and its better than being 80 miles away from home.
best of luck!
Xray Techs make ALOT of money. Check with the hospitals in your area, some have an xray programs. I graduated from a hospital program in Washington, DC. In this area there are 4 hospitals that offer RT programs.
